Basic Services
There is a mandatory service fee charge of $47.50 for basic telephone service for residence living in the Residence Halls, International House and Manville. This will reflect as a one-time charge each semester and billed to your Centralized Accounts Receivables System (CARS) account. All residents will also be assessed a $20.00 one-time semester set up fee which will be billed through your CARS account.
The basic mandatory service fee includes these services:
- Instant dial tone and ability to receive calls
- Five-digit campus dialing
You can call any campus telephone number (642-, 643-, or 664-) using only the last five digits.
- Unlimited local dialing
You can make a limitless number of local calls without additional charge, simply by dialing 9 + the number you wish to call. Local calls are those to numbers in areas within a 12 mile radius of the U.C. Berkeley campus.
- Taxes and Surcharges
- Individual Authorization Code (IAC)
You are assigned a random seven digit code when you first move into the Residence Halls or International House that allows you to place calls outside the campus' local calling area.
For further information on your IAC and how to use it, see Accessing and Using Your IAC.
You can place calls to any number outside the local dialing area by using your IAC. You will be charged only for long distance calls you make; others using your phone line should use their own IACS, and will have their calls billed to their individual accounts. Long distance calling information can be found in the Res Hall Phone Rates.
- Call waiting
Allows you to take incoming calls when you are on the phone. See Dialing Instructions for directions on this feature
- Three-Way Calling
You can set up three-way calls, connecting your line with two additional campus
numbers, or one additional campus number and one off-campus number. See Dialing Instructions for directions on using this feature.
- Access to 911 and other emergency services
- Caller ID Blocking
In June, 1996, Pacific Bell instituted a Caller ID service in California that
allows subscribers to view the telephone number of those calling them. To protect your privacy, we have added Complete Caller ID Blocking to all residence hall telephone lines.
With this feature, your number will not be revealed to most receiving parties (exception: numbers will always appear on calls to 800-, 888-, or 900- numbers, or to 9-1-1). You can override the block when making specific calls by entering the code "*82" before dialing either a 5-digit campus number or 9+ an external number.
